Why you can't get a signal at festivals and sports matches

Image
Ben Jones accepts a certain amount of frustration is part and parcel of being a football fan. But that should be because of the action on the pitch, not because he can't use his mobile phone to call a friend in the stadium, or check the progress of other critical games. "It's going to affect things so much, if this team wins, if that team draws…" says the creative director from North London. "So, to then go on your phone and find that you can't even get a bar? It's crazy." Connectivity, over mobile and fixed networks, is critical when people come together at sports tournaments, cultural festivals, or business events. When it fails venue operators and fans suffer One of the UK's newest sports stadia is Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium. The connectivity in the stadium was developed with HPE Aruba. On a matchday, it handles 11Gb inbound and outbound bandwidth, and data transfer of 205TB. The setup can support 18,000 simultaneous wi-f...

Scientist Reveals The Best Shoes to Wear While Lifting Weights

Image
If you go to the gym often, you might have been told you shouldn't lift weights in runners. The common belief is it is bad for your performance and can lead to injuries. But is this really the case? Let's unpack the science What your feet are doing when you lift Your feet are key to exercising safely and effectively. When you walk and run, they act like a springs and  help propel  you forward with each step. Your feet also help you  maintain balance  by supporting your weight. When you lift any amount of weight (for example, doing compound exercises such as squats) your feet are working hard to keep you stable – even if you're not thinking much about them. Researchers have also suggested having a stable foot helps you push more  efficiently into the ground . This may increase the amount of weight you can safely lift. But what you wear on your feet may also contribute to this. Can't I just wear runners? Unsurprisingly, given their name, running shoes ...

The 20-year-old newspaper column that gave a hint to Man City's new tactics

Image
Last week, Pep Guardiola replied to a journalist's question by saying: "Do you want to be my assistant coach? You are brilliant, you are top." The journalist asking that question was me. The reason for my question was to try to gain insight into Manchester City's increasing use of narrow and fluid attackers. In City's stellar side of 2017-18, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling would finish games with white paint on their boots after being stationed high and wide. Almost a decade on, Guardiola's system looks very different. To understand why requires a deep dive In my question I referenced an article Guardiola wrote for Spanish newspaper El Pais in 2006, in which he analysed Spain's 3-1 win against Tunisia. An important aspect of that column was his analysis of how to break down low blocks, which has been a key theme this season. "When you decide to play on the counter-attack, you have plenty of space. When you decide to attack [with the ball],...

Loan watch: Vieira and Kabia shine again

Image
In stunning form at present are  Fabio Vieira  and Hamburg, who have now moved into the top half of Bundesliga and away from immediate relegation danger with a 3-2 win over Union Berlin on Saturday. Now up to ninth, HSV are five unbeaten with Fabio - who played the full match over the weekend - at the heart of their side. Ethan Nwaneri  was on the bench as Marseille drew 2-2 with Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on Saturday, leaving OM fourth in the French top flight, 12 points adrift of the summit having seen Roberto de Zerbi recently depart his managerial post. Porto still lead Liga Portugal after a 1-1 draw with Sporting in their tantalising clash last Monday.  Jakub Kiwior  played 63 minutes before sustaining a hamstring issue, which then ruled the defender out of Sunday’s 1-0 away league win at Nacional. The 1-1 draw we played out with Brentford in the Premier League last Thursday saw  Reiss Nelson  deemed ineligible, and he will be hoping to fea...

Marc Cucurella to miss 3-4 weeks with hamstring injury — report

Image
According to the BBC, Marc Cucurella “is hoping to return in 3-4 weeks” from his hamstring injury, which presumably finally got properly scanned and assessed, with a rehab plan put in place. Cucurella got hurt in the game against Leeds United on Tuesday, but on Friday night, after our 4-0 victory against Hull City, head coach Liam Rosenior still couldn’t (or wouldn’t) give a timeframe on the injury just yet. Now we have an expected number. It’s not exactly an ideal number, but it certainly could be worse. Unfortunately, that means Cucurella will miss the big games coming up in a couple weeks against Arsenal and Aston Villa. And while there is a chance he comes back before the March international break, it wouldn’t be surprising if we don’t see him back in action until after that, in April. Until then, we’re going to need Jorrel Hato to step up and build on a few of his more promising outings of late.

Alvaro Arbeloa: “We’re lucky to have a player like Trent”

Image
Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa spoke to the media after his team’s 4-1 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday night. He was asked about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance, to which he said: “I won’t say he surprised me, but he seems like a very intelligent lad who understands the game very well and quickly grasps what we want from him. He’s not your typical full-back who’s always going to be wide; he can also play centrally. We’re lucky to have a player like that. With Gonzalo in the box, he could look for crosses. He’s a great player; I’m not going to discover that now. I’m happy that he continues to get playing time, find his rhythm, and keep getting back to his best form. It’s been a very pleasant surprise to see how he understands the game, how he sees the spaces. Things that are very important for a coach: having players who understand what’s wanted. Not just the passing to get the team running, but to implement everything we want from him.” Arbeloa on the win “Gr...

Mikel Arteta insists it was ‘best decision’ to let Arsenal star leave despite injury woes

Image
Mikel Arteta insists it was still the ‘best decision’ for Arsenal to allow Ethan Nwaneri to leave the club to join Marseille on loan. Nwaneri broke into the first-team last season but big spending at the Emirates in the summer saw him pushed down the pecking order, starting just four matches in all competitions – none of those in the Premier League. The 18-year-old did not even make the bench in the final four league games before he sealed a January move to Marseille until the end of the season. Nwaneri has started every game since arriving in France but back in north London, injuries mean Arteta is suddenly short of options in midfield. Martin Odegaard has also struggled with a knock in recent weeks and was spotted leaving the stadium with a limp after the 1-1 draw with Brentford on Thursday. Eberechi Eze, one of the signings who pushed Nwaneri down the pecking order, is woefully out of form. Arsenal are still battling on four fronts with Sunday’s FA Cup clash with Wigan A...

Better society if we 'embrace other cultures' - Guardiola

Image
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says we will "have a better society" by embracing other cultures. Guardiola was asked for his response to comments made by Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe when he said the UK had been "colonised by immigrants". Ratcliffe later apologised for "offending some people" but maintained "open debate" on the matter was still needed. Speaking at a news conference before Saturday's FA Cup fourth round tie against Salford (15:00 GMT), Spaniard Guardiola said: "Everybody wants to have a better life. Every person wants to have a perspective to have a better future for themselves, for their families or their friends. Sometimes opportunities come in the place that you were born and the place that you go. "That is why the place you were born doesn't make a difference. "Most people run away from their countries for the problems that are in their country, not because they want to...

Nottingham Forest sack Sean Dyche as head coach

Image
Nottingham Forest have confirmed the immediate dismissal of Sean Dyche as head coach, ending his tenure at the City Ground. In an official club statement, Forest thanked Dyche and his coaching staff for their contributions during his time in charge and wished them well for the future. The club added that no further comments would be made at this time. The decision comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the team’s performance in the Premier League, with Forest having struggled to maintain consistent results despite a promising start to the 2025-26 campaign under Dyche. The former Everton and Burnley manager was appointed in late 2024 to steady the ship following a turbulent period. No details on an interim replacement or the search for a new permanent head coach have been released yet.  The news has sparked immediate reactions among fans, pundits, and players, with many expressing surprise at the timing mid-season.
